1925 – 2015
Her family announces with great sadness, the passing of Verla O’Neill (Hodgins) surrounded by her loving family at Health Sciences North, Sudbury on February 24th at age 89.
Verla worked as a homemaker throughout her life. She raised her three sons to be fair towards others and followed that advice herself. She was the family anchor and was very supportive to her sons in their academic and work activities.
Verla was born and raised on a farm near MacGregor, Manitoba. After the Second World War, she married Frederick O’Neill and moved with him to Sudbury for better opportunities. She and her husband lived in Sudbury until they moved to a hobby farm near Chelmsford, ON after Frederick’s retirement.
She spent many happy summers with Fred and family at their camp on Onaping Lake. Verla’s hobbies included knitting and baking. The family cherishes her beautiful knitted sweaters and blankets and a number of her recipes.
Verla is survived by Fred, her husband of 69 years and by her sons: Dwayne (Venera) and Eric (Louise); her daughter-in-law Debbie; her grandchildren, Natasha (Nick), Steven (Lacey); Keeley (Ricky), Kyfer, Shannon (Geoff), Casey (Kevin), and great-grandchildren Alice, Molly and Matthew. Loving sister-in-law to Shirley and Bob (Mary) O’Neill. She will also be missed by her nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son Lyle (Debbie) in 2002, as well as by her brother David and sister Violet.
The family would like to thank the Community Care Access Centre and the staff at Walford on the Park, Verla's last home. We will be forever grateful for your care and support.
In accordance with Verla’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Contributions in her name to either the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation are welcomed with gratitude.
A celebration of Verla's life for family and friends will be held at a later date with an announcement to follow.
