Duncan, Jon

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jon David Duncan at Maison McCulloch Hospice on July 20, 2024.

Jon was a devoted husband, an extraordinary father, an incredible grandfather and a loving brother and uncle.  His friendship is treasured by many.

Born on February 5, 1951 in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario to Tom and Evelyn Duncan (predeceased), Jon lived a life full of love, gentleness and kindness.  He was the heart and soul of our family, always putting our needs before his own, providing unwavering support and unconditional love. His smile and witty humour brought joy to many and his gentle spirit was a comfort to all who knew him.

As a husband, Jon was the steadfast partner of Diane (née Hauch). Their union which began on October 7, 1978, celebrating their 46th year was a testament to their love and mutual respect.  Together they created a home filled with warmth.

Jon was a devoted father to Courtney (Derreck) and Colin who were the light of his life.  He guided them with love, patience and wisdom instilling in them the values of kindness, compassion and integrity.  His children will always remember him as their greatest supporter and most trusted confidante.

Jon was the proud “Grampa” of Logan and Liam-Jon Thompson. He always delighted in their presence, made sure that his mother’s cookie jar was full prior to their visits and was always prepared to be an animated story teller of their favourite books.

As a brother, Jon shared a special bond with Graham (Paddy) and Jim (Joyce) and brother-in-law to Valerie Hauch (Chris Embree).  His siblings will forever cherish the memories of their time together.

He will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews Pam, Chris (Renee), Kate (Mike), Andrei (Elanor), Kira Embree, and was a loving great-uncle of Duncan and Danica, Viktoriya and Izzy.

Jon worked for over 30 years at the City of Sudbury retiring in 2010. In his retirement, Jon expressed his creativity and love of the arts through his many beautiful paintings, and his gift of song. He enjoyed his love of music during his membership with the Bel Canto Choir along with various church choir and barbershop groups over the years.

In retirement Jon also travelled extensively with his wife, Diane, but his favourite place was on Manitoulin Island where he enjoyed being with their summer “Camp Family.”

The family would like to thank and acknowledge the wonderful and compassionate care that Jon received from the staff of the Maison McCullough hospice, Dr. Dylan Falk and the team of the Palliative Care Department of the Northeastern Cancer Centre and Nicole of Bayshore Health Care.

In honour of Jon’s remarkable life, a Celebration of Life will be held at The Holiday Inn, 1696 Regent Street on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 from 4:00 pm – 8:00pm.  Refreshments will be served.

In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the Maison McCulloch Hospice (www.maisonmcculloughhospice.org/donate) or The House of Kin (www.houseofkinsudbury.ca)

May the Angels of Heaven embrace Jon in their choir, and lead him to paradise.
