Smith, Kenneth Allan Sr. “Ken”

Kenneth (Ken) Allan Smith, Sr., passed away on January 30, 2025, at his home in Val Caron, Ontario, at the age of 86.

Born on July 6, 1938, in North Bay, Ontario, Ken dedicated his life to both his family and his work. A skilled heavy-duty mechanic, he was a valued member of Jarvis Clark Inc. from its inception in the 1960s until it left North Bay in the 1980s. Over these years, Ken contributed to numerous projects and played a key role in the production of innovative mining machinery sold around the globe. The latter part of Ken’s career in the mining industry was spent in the Sudbury area working for various contractors and equipment suppliers. Even after retiring, Ken remained active by assisting at his local golf course, where he spent countless hours keeping their fleet of carts running while enjoying the game he loved.

Ken had a passion for the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer. His annual hunting and fishing trips with his buddies were “not to be missed” events and he cherished the friendships they fostered. He also had a knack for tinkering with all things mechanical around the house, always finding ways to repair or improve a castoff that was given to him and labeled junk. Dad would find a way to bring it back to life. Beyond his hobbies and career, he cherished time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. While a tough-looking guy on the outside, he was a softy when it came to the ones he loved, willingly offering a helping hand or some words of wisdom to those in need.

Ken is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Valerie (née Alkins). He will be deeply missed by his children: Ronnie, Janey (Gord), David (Kelly), Lanie (Dave, deceased) and Ken Jr. His grandchildren, Stephen (Karen), Melissa “Missy” (Amanda), Charlie, Virginia, Riley, Kenna, Dwayne, and Nicole (Greg) will forever hold fond memories of their time with him. Great-grandchildren Belle, Layla, Landon, Jacob, and Jackson will also carry forward his legacy. Ken is also survived by his siblings Sheila and David “Sammy”.

Ken was a devoted husband, loving father, and loyal friend. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. May he rest in peace.

Details for a Celebration of Life, to be held in the spring, will be provided at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Ranger’s Cremation and Burial Services Ltd.

  2. Loved my brother-in-law. Spent some happy times golfing and fishing after retirement with him in Kenora, and have great memories of his help cutting out the window holes in our new house in Sioux Lookout with a chain saw. He was funny and generous and kind and is very much missed.
