It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Saara Honkonen (née Kylmala) on March 7, 2023, at Health Sciences North. Predeceased by her husband Voitto in 1999. Beloved mother of Tarja Korpela (Markku) of Rovaniemi, Finland. Anne Callahan (Dean) of Sudbury, and Juha Honkonen of Fort McMurray, Alberta. Mummi to Markus, Sakke, Serafiina, Samuel, and Patrik. Sadly, missed by her siblings Eeva and Liisa of Sudbury, Leena and Jukka of Finland, and Pekka of Vancouver, BC. Saara immigrated to Canada in 1967, settling in Kirkland Lake. She moved to Finlandia Village in 2014. Mom excelled in all things cooking and baking, from Finnish pulla to French macaroons, jams, and pickles. Everyone has pairs of Mummi’s knitted mitts and socks. She loved all pets, having many cats and dogs over the years, then cherishing her grand-dogs near and far. Our families are truly touched by the enormous amount of love and support during this time. Mom loved everyone and was loved by all. A Celebration of life will be held in the fall.
Dear Tarja, Anne, and Juha, please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your mother. I was saddened to read of her passing.
I have fond memories of her and her kindness. Praying for your comfort and peace across the miles.

My deepest and most sincere condolences to Tarja, Anne and Juha and family. Saara was a wonderful talented human being and was loved by everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her. She often invited me to stop by for a visit on my many trips to Hayward, WI and always had some of her delicious baking to serve with a cup of coffee and sandwich. She will be forever missed but never forgotten. Heaven has gained an Angel.
