Laberge, Gilles

It is with profound sadness that the family of Gilles Laberge announce his passing at Extendicare York on February 24, 2025, at the age of 84.

Beloved son of Maurice and Leonie Laberge (both predeceased) of Sudbury.  Brother to Jeannette Laberge of Ottawa, Normand Laberge of Sudbury, Pierrette White (Florian Rainville) of Sudbury and good friend and brother in law to Rafael Gomez-Morales .

Life partner of many years, Aldea Sloss (predeceased), whom he shared many adventures with.

Devoted father and stepfather to Andre (Linda) Laberge, Eddy (Sonia) Laberge, Robin (predeceased) (Jeannine) Sloss, Todd Sloss, Grant Sloss, Corey (Brenda) Sloss, and Ann Sloss.

Loving grandfather and step grandfather to Jamie Lebel, Jesse Sloss, Marc Cataford, Tina Cataford, Kyle Sloss, Tyler Sloss, Corey Cataford, Sierrah Zawaki and Hailee Laberge.

He will be greatly missed by many friends, nieces and nephews. He held a special place in his heart for nieces Anne, Mona and Lynn who visited him whenever possible over the years.

Gilles told us, close to the end of his life, that he had a great life and he accomplished all he wanted to while he was here.

He worked in the construction field all his life, owning and operating two businesses successfully during that time. In his earlier years he owned and operated Laberge Paving and later Laberge Excavating. He spent many hours behind the wheel of gravel trucks and operating heavy equipment, which he took great pleasure in. He immensely enjoyed the comradery of the work site banter which provided him with the greatest stories to carry with him to share in his senior years. Oh boy, the stories he would share.

When he wasn’t working, he was enjoying some rest and relaxation camping, fishing, hunting, quadding, snowmobiling and taking long relaxing drives with his partner.

Above all else in his life, his greatest pride and joy was his two boys, who he shared with their mother Fernande. He loved them unconditionally and with all his heart. He cherished every moment he was able to have with them right to the very end.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the 6th Floor staff at Extendicare York for their kindness, compassion and support during his time with them. A special thank you to Jennifer “Sweetheart”, for her kindness and support in helping us through his final days with us.

A Celebration of Gilles Life will be held in the spring.
