Simoneau, Normand

Normand Simoneau (88 years), beloved spouse and father, lost his long-fought battle with respiratory disease on July 19^th, 2024, and passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family at Pioneer Manor.

Norm worked as an industrious miner and mason at Inco’s Stobie and Levack mines for 30+ years prior to retiring in the early 1980s.  An avid fisherman and deer hunter, Norm spent the majority of his retirement summers with his wife Gisèle camping on Manitoulin Island where he also made several lifelong friends and became known to everyone in the trailer park as the Master Fish Smoker. He thoroughly enjoyed grilling and cooking and became quite renowned for his secret fish chowder recipe and baked beans cooked in the sand. Norm was also a highly skilled carpenter and woodworker, having built many homes in the Sunnyside subdivision of Val Caron. Always willing to lend a hand, a tool or whatever anyone needed, Norm was always happy to share sample dishes of his “world-famous” and delicious pike fritters or smoked trout. Friends and family will also all fondly remember him for his extraordinary generosity, his curious mind, and his charming, yet audacious or filter-free, sense of humour.

Normand is survived by his devoted wife Gisèle (née Bisaillon) and loving daughter Nicole, and now joins daughters Diane and Lise and his son Denis (all predeceased). Loving son of Joseph and Eléonore Simoneau (both predeceased), and brother to Cecile Lavigne (late Omer) and Roger (Betty). Predeceased by siblings Leo, Paul (Tina), Gerry (late Jacqueline), Evelyn Garland (late Eddy) and Theresa Chartrand (late Bob). He will be sadly missed by several nieces and nephews and multiple friends he’s made throughout the years.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Pioneer Manor (Ramsey unit) for their diligent and compassionate care provided to Normand. He could only speak the kindest words about all of them and will be missed by many residents who got to know him there over the past year.

As per Normand’s wishes, a private burial and celebration of life will take place at a later date.

Simoneau, Normand

S’est éteint Normand Simoneau (88 ans), époux et père dévoué, suite à un long combat contre une maladie respiratoire inguérissable. Il nous a quitté paisiblement le 19 juillet 2024, entouré de sa famille au Manoir des pionniers.

Pendant plus de 30 ans, Normand a travaillé en tant que mineur et maçon pour Inco (mines Stobie et Levack) pour enfin prendre sa retraite au début des années 1980. Il était un pêcheur phénoménal et un adepte de la chasse au chevreuil. Normand adorait passer ses étés au camping sur l’Île Manitoulin avec son épouse Gisèle et il s’est vite fait des amis à vie durant lors de ses séjours là-bas. On le sollicitait souvent pour des avis, et surtout, des recettes de poisson variées. Il est même devenu quelque peu célèbre grâce à son talent de cuisinier et ses recettes « secrètes » de chaudrées au poisson, ses fèves au lard cuits dans le sable, et surtout ses fameux « fritters » que plusieurs qualifiaient de renommée mondiale. Normand a toujours été un charpentier très  talentueux; il travaillait bien le bois pour toutes sortes de projets, à grande ou petite échelle, et a même construit bon nombre de maisons à Sunnyside, Val Caron lors de ses congés d’été. Un homme toujours prêt à porter main forte à quiconque en besoin, on se souviendra toujours de sa grande générosité, son esprit curieux et son excellent sens d’humour, plaisanteries grossières incluses.

Normand laisse dans le deuil son épouse bien-aimée, Gisèle (née Bisaillon) et sa fille bienveillante, Nicole. Il est prédécédé par ses trois autres enfants, Diane, Lise et Denis. Fils de feu Joseph et Eléonore Simoneau, frère de Cecile Lavigne (feu Omer) et Roger (Betty). Prédécédé par frères et soeurs Léo, Paul (feu Tina), Gerry (feu Jacqueline), Evelyn Garland (feu Eddy) et Thérèse Chartrand (feu Bob). Il manquera également à plusieurs nièces et neveux ainsi qu’à de nombreux amis qui l’ont côtoyé au fil des ans.

La famille désire remercier tout le personnel au Manoir des pionniers (section Ramsey). Vos soins attentionnés et votre soutien continu à la famille n’ont jamais passé inaperçus, tant de la part de la famille que de Normand lui-même qui chantait souvent vos éloges.

Selon les souhaits de Normand, l’enterrement des cendres et une célébration de vie privée auront lieu à une date ultérieure.
