(March 1944-January 2025)
Landa, beloved mother of Sean, passed away peacefully in Sudbury, ON of ALS on January 16, 2025, leaving the world without one of its most generous, positive and faith-filled best.
Landa was born in Sudbury in 1944 to Peter and Myrtle Miller and absolutely loved being a small town, Northern Ontario girl. She attended school in Levack before starting a teaching career that would take her on a great journey. She started in Sault Ste. Marie, then her sense of adventure and opportunity took her to Rankin Inlet, NU, where she worked and met her husband Robert (of Neepawa and Winnipeg, MB, son of Roy and Muriel Sweet). They settled in the Sudbury area, married and started their family.
Landa taught at St. Charles in Chelmsford before moving west to Winnipeg, where she would spend the next 30 years, teaching at Polson School and Donwood Elementary. During that time, she received both a Lieutenant Governor’s and Prime Minister’s Award for excellence in the teaching profession. Landa loved teaching, especially empowering young children with the gift of reading. She had a special affection for children with disabilities, Indigenous children, and those from disadvantaged situations.
Retiring in 2004, she moved back to Sudbury and enjoyed her special times with sisters Deanna Miller (deceased, of Sudbury) and Ann O’Shell (husband Ron, of Manitoulin Island). Landa is also survived by her brother, Blaine Miller, who travelled from Ecuador to be with her this past summer.
Landa will be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews, Leslie Menard and family (Barrie, ON), Lisa Teske and family (Barrie, ON), Lori-Ann Poirier and family (Lively, ON), Korena O’Shell and family (Chelmsford, ON), David Kressock and family, Michael Kressock and family and Laura Kressock (all of Winnipeg, MB). She was also very fortunate to have enjoyed her many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Sean lives in Pitt Meadows, BC with his wife Tomoka and their children Owen and Emily. When visiting BC, Landa spent many happy hours teaching them to read even before they started school. Her grandchildren were a treasure and a great source of joy and pride.
Without question, the greatest friend and partner of Landa’s last 12 years is her significant other, Sergio Ceschin (Sudbury, ON). Indeed, Sergio is the reward for her many years of goodness, selflessness, and care of others. The two were inseparable and Landa’s entire family is forever indebted for the love and support Sergio gave her each and every day.
A special heartfelt thank you to Dr. Suman Koka and the teams at York Extendicare for their care and support of Landa.
There will be a ceremony and burial at Maple Crest Cemetery, Dowling, ON at a later date in the spring/summer of 2025.
Donations to the ALS Society of Canada are appreciated.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Ranger’s Cremation and Burial Services Ltd. Online condolences can be posted at www.RangersSudbury.com
My sincere condolences to Landa’s family, and friends.

So very sorry to receive this news this afternoon. A very long time ago (the summer of 1965, I think) Landa and I sat together in the gate house at Windy Lake, welcoming the public to camping and picnicking. It was a very, very wet summer, and we had lots of time to chat, telling stories and generally reforming the constitution. It was lovely to get reacquainted recently over social media. And I will miss her very much indeed. Sincere condolences to her family.
